80 Mallorca claims food sovereignty at the Lloret de Vistalegre Festival

 

Food sovereignty has once again been at the centre of public debate in Mallorca this May 2026. The municipality of Lloret de Vistalegre recently hosted the Mallorca Food Sovereignty Festival 2026, a meeting that brought together agricultural producers, researchers, social organisations and citizens with the aim of reflecting on the future of the Balearic Islands' food system and the challenges facing the primary sector.

During the different activities organised throughout the festival, participants emphasised the need to strengthen local food production and reduce the external dependence of an island territory that imports a large part of the products it consumes. According to the organisers, this dependence makes the archipelago more vulnerable to economic, climate or geopolitical crises that can affect supply chains.

One of the central themes of the debate was the protection of agricultural land. In recent years, urban pressure and the increase in land value have made it difficult for new farmers to access land. This situation, combined with the aging of the farming population, raises questions about the generational succession and continuity of many farms.

Participants also defended agroecology as an alternative capable of combining food production with the conservation of natural resources. This model is committed to sustainable agricultural practices, less dependence on external inputs and a more balanced relationship between economic activity and the environment

Local marketing was another of the main themes. Several entities stressed the importance of strengthening short marketing channels to guarantee fairer prices for producers and facilitate access for the population to fresh, quality food produced in the territory.

The concept of food sovereignty goes beyond simple self-sufficiency. It defends the right of peoples to decide their agricultural and food policies, prioritizing the needs of local communities over the interests of global markets. In this sense, the participants have claimed a model that places farming at the center of decisions and that guarantees decent conditions for people who work in the countryside.

In a context marked by climate change, the rise in food prices and the fragility of global supply chains, initiatives such as this festival demonstrate the growing interest in building more resilient, sustainable and territorially rooted food systems. The debates held in Lloret de Vistalegre show that food sovereignty continues to be a living proposal to address some of the great social, economic and environmental challenges of the present.
